Why should I do an internship?

With the growing number of graduates applying for positions, it has never been more difficult to find a job. An internship is a great way to enhance your CV/resume and add some work experience that employers now demand. It is also a good advertisement to companies of your abilities, as businesses continue the trend of appointing internally from the interns they have seen first-hand.

What type of company can ICI place me with?

ICI works with organisations in virtually every area. This includes companies in the Public and Private Sector, multi-national and Chinese-based businesses, and large corporations and small businesses. We have positions available in Legal, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Public Relations, Event Planning, ICT, Business, Media and Journalism, Tourism and Hospitality, NGO and Trade Associations, and Engineering. In short, whatever internship you are looking for ICI will have a program to fit you.

Are ICI internships paid?

ICI offers a number of internships some of which are paid and some are not. Paid internships usually require a bit of experience from applicants and will have more clearly defined expected outcomes from the selected intern. Unpaid interns have in the past sometimes been offered a small bonus and/or paid lunch and transportation. This is at the discretion of the company though and should not be expected. If an internship is paid it will be stated in advance along with the requirements to qualify.

I’m not a native English speaker. Can I still apply?

ICI have agreements with many universities and countries around the world including non-native English speaking countries. If English is not your first language we ask that you have an IELTS score of at least 6 or a TOEFL score of at least 550.

When should I do an internship?

There is no set time to do an internship and it varies from person to person. Generally people will do an internship before starting an undergraduate program, during their summer break whilst studying, or after they finish studying to gain some experience in their field. In addition some people will do an internship several years after their degree if they are thinking of changing their career path.

How long does an internship last?

Again this depends on the needs of the person. Generally internships for undergraduates last around 10-12 weeks and are done over their summer break. For post graduates, internships can last longer and often transition into a job either with the company they are doing the internship with, or with another company in the same sector.

Do I need to be able to speak Chinese to take part in the program?

In general interns will not be expected to know Chinese before they arrive. In addition ICI will provide Chinese courses during your stay. There may be some positions that do require some degree of Chinese proficiency, however these will be clearly marked form the outset.

I would like to do an internship in a sector not listed. Can ICI still help?

At ICI we try to individually tailor each program to the intern. We have contacts in many different companies and if we haven’t listed and area which doesn’t suit you we may still be able to find you a position. Fill out the registration form and we will let you know what we can do to help.
